Carnival in Düsseldorf
For most cities along the rhine such as Düsseldorf, Carnival (Wikipedia: Carnival) is very important. The actual carnival week starts this year on Thursday, 19. February (Altweiberfastnacht) . German Carnival parades are held on the weekend and especially on Rosenmontag (Rose Monday).
So you should be prepared to see a huge amount of dressed up or masqueraded people in the city. On thursday there will be celebrations in the streets and the pubs in the old town of Düsseldorf (Altstadt). The Thursday is dedicated to the women and it is rite to cut off mens ties. If you wear a tie on thursday you better be prepared, that it will be cut off by someone. But you will receive a little kiss (Bützchen) in return.
